A small matter of netiquette

Fellow bloggers, I know you're out there. I have a question to be answered.

How long after a post is published should the comment discussion remain active?

I know that there's no mechanical limit to how long a thread can be posted to, but surely there's some rule of thumb for the shelf life of run-of-the-mill posts. Sometimes I read posts two weeks after their publication, but feel conspicuous commenting, especially if I'm catching up for all two weeks in one day (perhaps not in order) and may be inclined to comment on multiple posts in the span of an hour or two.

So at what point is it strange to be commenting on old entries?

Or is it a matter of "who would ever refuse a comment?"

Interesting, I wonder if you've had an experience like I had recently.

I commented on this guy's blog post, not actually realising it was about a year or so old. He'd linked to it from a new post so I assumed it was still open for debate -- it had a lot of comments as it was on quite a controversial subject, and there seemed to be some healthy debate going on, so I pitched in. Soon after I got a seriously snotty email from the guy basically asking who the hell I thought I was digging up this issue after so long and, quote "trying to make trouble on his blog." I tried to explain myself but just got, again a quote "don't play dumb with me." I've only ever had negative and unpleasant experiences with this guy since -- I obviously really bugged him! I now boycott his blog but I'm always wary about commenting on old posts now.

Frankly I think it's freaking ridiculous. If you don't want comments on a post anymore, close them or delete the thing. Why post in the first place if you don't want responses?? I'd certainly never refuse a comment!

(PS: by the way I haven't forgotten your poems my dear!)

(PPS: haha! OK, I have a very infantile sense of humour, but... the verification word for this comment form is "pants". Muahaha!)

No, not quite an experience like that. But that guy is lame.

I don't think I'd ever comment farther back than a month, but even in the fast paced culture of the internet where some blogs post multiple times daily, a couple weeks can feel like ancient history.

(PS: No worries. I've still got that article on my mind, too!)
